Lit bridges, a golden Parliament and the castle above the water: what a night on the river looks like, when darkness falls each month, and which boat to pick.

In short
Budapest changes character when the sun goes down. The Hungarian Tourism Agency puts it plainly: the lit bridges are a spectacle of their own, and the architecture along the riverside shows a very different face once it is showered in light.4 The same agency recommends taking in the night skyline from a boat on the Danube rather than from a bus.5 On the water you sit low, between the two banks, and the city rises on both sides of you like a stage set.
The Royal Palace on Castle Hill dominates the skyline and is lit up at night, so the Buda side gives you its biggest silhouette first.6 The Chain Bridge, renovated with 1,180 LED lamps, can shine in several colours but is expected to glow warm white for most of the year.7 Across the river, the Parliament fills the Pest bank. A Danube river cruise past the Budapest night lights is, in the end, an hour of looking up, so a seat at the rail is worth more than one by the bar.
There is a gentler show too. Near the southern tip of Margaret Island, a musical fountain gives light shows with music in the evenings, and some routes turn close to the island before heading back south.8 The water itself becomes part of the picture: it doubles every lit facade, it carries the reflections of the bridges, and on a still night it turns the city into two cities. Bring a phone with a night mode, or simply leave it in your pocket for the first few minutes and simply look.
The evening-cruise year
1 January
Sightseeing cruises leave Vigadó tér in the evening from the first day of the year.1
14 February
MAHART's prosecco boat starts its season.9
20 August
The evening cruise from Vigadó tér does not run on the national holiday.10
29 September
The prosecco boat sails as a forralt bor (mulled wine) boat until 26 December.9
24 December
Evening cruises run to 31 December, except on 24 December.2
Darkness arrives at very different times through the year, and that decides whether a late departure is a night cruise or a sunset cruise. In mid-June the sun stays up for 15.9 hours; in mid-December it manages only 8.5.3 In winter an early evening boat is already sailing in full darkness; in midsummer you may need one of the last departures of the day to see the lights come on, and a long dusk sits between the two.
The boats run through all of it. MAHART PassNave's 2026 timetable has evening sightseeing cruises from Vigadó tér from 1 January, and they continue to 31 December, with the single exception of 24 December.12 The regular evening cruise from Vigadó tér does not run on 20 August, the national holiday with the fireworks.10 If your dates are fixed, the season is never the problem; the question is only which hour of the evening you want.
The chart below counts the dark hours in the middle of each month and, beside them, the days wet enough to log 2.5 mm of rain.3 In March and September the day and night are close to even: the sun is up 11.8 hours in mid-March and 12.7 hours in mid-September.3 Those are the months when an early evening departure catches both the last light and the first lamps, which is the best of both worlds for photographs.

The lit-up bridges over the Danube are a magnificent spectacle, as well as the architecture along the riverside, which shows a very different face once the sun goes down and is showered in light.
Every honest guide to the Budapest night cruise has to say this: nobody on a boat controls the city's lights. The listing this site books states that the decorative lighting of the landmarks, the Parliament and the bridges included, is not guaranteed on any date, because it follows city and national energy policy. Another operator notes that the city sometimes changes the colour or the intensity of the lights for particular events.
That warning was not theoretical. In 2026 the night sightseeing cruise added a notice to its listing: during the drought, the government and the mayor ordered energy-saving measures, and the Parliament, Matthias Church, Buda Castle and other landmarks were not lit during evening cruises. A notice like that can come and go faster than any review, so on the day it is worth a look at the city's own news before you set your heart on a golden Parliament.
What do you do with that uncertainty? Book a ticket you can cancel: each night cruise here refunds you in full if you cancel 24 hours ahead. Choose a departure close to sunset, so the river, the bridges and the sky give you a show even if the floodlights stay dark. And remember that the boats keep their own deck lights and the city keeps its street lamps: the river at night is still the river at night, lit or not.

The night sightseeing cruise this page recommends runs 50 minutes to 1 hour with a glass of Törley Prosecco on evening departures, an audio guide by QR code in English, Italian, Spanish, German, Polish and Hungarian, a semi-open deck and a bar, from $16. It has 21,830 reviews and a rating of 4.37, and dogs are welcome aboard. For a first look at the river by night it is the safe, inexpensive choice.
If you would rather pay a little more for a higher rating, the City Highlights cruise has a night option of 1 hour from Dock 42, with a welcome drink and a bar but no guide, rated 4.62 from 46,498 reviews and priced from $18. A Budapest evening cruise from Dock 7 lasts 1 hour, includes one drink of your choice, a multilingual audio guide and Wi-Fi, and starts from $29. It suits anyone who wants the stories behind the buildings.
Then there is the cruise this site sells, which turns the evening into an open bar: 75 minutes with Hungarian sparkling wine refilled at the bar, spritzers and beer, from $29. It is the most reviewed boat on the river, with 46,606 reviews. For a first night in Budapest a simple sightseeing hour is enough; for a celebration, the open bar is better value than buying glass after glass. The calculator below adds them up for your group.
Night cruises leave from both banks, and the dock is the detail people get wrong. The night sightseeing cruise boards at Vigadó tér, Dock 5, or, on its Parliament Panorama option, at Batthyány tér Pier 1 on the Buda side. The City Highlights boat leaves from Dock 42, about 800 m north of Margaret Bridge by Szent István Park. The Dock 7 cruise boards on Jane Haining rakpart near the Petőfi tér tram stop.
Arrive early. Seats on the open-bar boat and on City Highlights are first come, first served, and the best places on an open deck go to the people already waiting at the gangway. The City Highlights operator wants you at the gangway 15 minutes early, and it sails on the dot. On the open-bar cruise, boarding starts 15 minutes before departure and the boat cannot wait. A tram or a short walk along the embankment is the calmest way to arrive.
Weather rarely stops a night cruise. The night sightseeing cruise runs in rain, and its operator may cancel or change departures only in flood or very low water. On a wet evening the covered deck becomes the best seat in the house, and the reflections on a rain-dark river are some of the most beautiful of the year. Keep your ticket on your phone, check the dock once more before you leave the hotel, and allow time for the crowds on the embankment.
The river is colder than the streets, and the deck is where the views are. In January the average night low in central Budapest is -1.2 °C, and in December -0.2 °C, so a winter night cruise means a proper coat, gloves and a hat if you plan to stay outside.3 A closed cabin is the warm option on boats that have one, but the best photographs are taken at the rail, where the wind off the water finds every gap in your clothing.
Spring and autumn are the tricky seasons, because a warm afternoon turns into a cool evening fast. In April the average high is 18.2 °C and the low 8.3 °C, and October is very similar, at 16.8 °C and 8.6 °C.3 A light jacket that packs small is the answer, together with shoes that grip on a damp deck. If you sit inside, choose a window on the side facing the bank you most want to see, and swap sides when the boat turns.
Summer nights are the easy ones: the average July low is 18 °C, warm enough for a shirt on deck well after dark.3 They are also the busiest, with the latest sunsets, so book a departure late enough to see the lights. Whatever the season, keep your hands free for the camera or the glass, and leave bulky bags at the hotel: decks are narrow, stairs are steep, and the hour goes faster than you expect when the Parliament comes into view.

Pick a date, board 15 minutes early, and cancel free up to 24 hours before.
From early evening. Times change with the season. MAHART runs evening sightseeing cruises all year from Vigadó tér, except on 24 December and 20 August.210
About an hour. The night sightseeing cruise lasts 50 minutes to 1 hour; the open-bar cruise on this site lasts 75 minutes.
Usually, never guaranteed. Lighting follows energy policy. In 2026 the landmarks went dark on evening cruises during the drought, so plan for both.
One glass, on night departures. The night sightseeing cruise pours a glass of Törley Prosecco on its evening sailings; the open-bar cruise refills sparkling wine all trip.
Yes, as a rule. The night sightseeing cruise runs in rain; departures may be cancelled or changed only in flood or very low water.
On one boat, yes. The night sightseeing cruise welcomes dogs on board; check other listings before you bring a pet.
The one facing the Parliament. Boats turn during the hour, so both banks come round. Sit near the rail, and move when the Parliament or the castle swings into view.
